As of yesterday, summer is officially over, and it’s back to university life for me. I spent much of my vacation in Bogotá, preparing for a salsa competition that took place in early July. Our group, Afrolatina Salsa Show, took third place out of sixteen groups with our fifteen-minute piece entitled “El gringo.” The storyline behind the show is that a foreigner (me) arrives to Colombia hoping to learn salsa. Our choreography featured different styles of salsa as well as monologues by yours truly in an exaggerated gringo accent. The show brought a lot of laughs from the hundreds of spectators at the event. Once the video gets up on YouTube, I’ll make sure to post a link.

Drinking a coconut on island south of El Valle

In mid July, my girlfriend, Paula, got back from volunteering in Peru, and we left Bogotá to explore other parts of Colombia. We decided to head to the Pacific coast, in the department of Chocó, which is much less developed than the Caribbean coast. Chocó is still a conflict area, though the coast is safe given the presence of a military base. However, due to both the conflict and, more importantly, the fact that Chocó is essentially covered by rainforest, it is impossible to arrive by land. For that reason, we had to take a tiny plane—only 15 passengers when full—from Medellín to Bahía Solano, Chocó, and from there hitch a ride on a jeep to a small fishing town, El Valle, about forty-five minutes away.

Playa Almejal in El Valle

El Valle is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. It is essentially ocean, beach, and rainforest, with nothing in between. The endless stretches of beach are essentially vacant, as El Valle is visited by relatively few tourists; Paula and I often had kilometers of beach to ourselves. Two hours south of El Valle on foot begins Utría National Park, which protects vast areas of jungle and mangrove swamps. We had an opportunity to hike in the park with a local guide—necessary given the lack of defined trails. Unfortunately, the guide did not alert us to the length of our journey (nine hours) nor did he encourage us to carry any more the dry crackers and salty cheese. Despite my hunger, I still finished the day feeling quite the jungle man.

View from the bar, El Mirador

Almejal at sunset (rocks in background are El Mirador)

In contrast with our rainforest trek, the rest of our time in coast was quite relaxing. Many days we spent at the beach—boogie boarding, reading, or visiting a random bar located on the beach overlooking the ocean. We also had the opportunity to go back to Utría, this time in boat. We spent the afternoon at an island that is part of the park and snorkeled by reefs close to shore. I was lucky enough to see an enormous sting ray in addition to loads of brightly colored fish. We spent the boat ride back to El Valle whale watching. Whales from Antarctica migrate each year to the area, many of which can be observed from shore during peak whale watching time. Although we were there at the beginning of whale season, we were able to see one whale…though from quite a distance.

Soccer on the beach

It was hard to leave El Valle, not because of the greatness of the place (though true), but rather the lack of transportation in which to leave the area. We had planned to take a cargo boat down the coast to Colombia’s largest port, Buenaventura. Locals commonly travel on boat if they need to leave the area, and I was determined to prove I could hang with the best of them by surviving a 24-hour trip in a boat not designed for passengers. Unfortunately, three days in a row the boat’s departure was delayed until the next day. On the third day, after having spent more money than planned in lodging and food, we decided to fly back to Medellín, a luxury that cost us little money and saved us a lot of time.

Paula and I at beach

From Medellín, we continued on to Cali, where we visited Paula’s extended family, went out, and nursed our sunburns. I returned to Bogotá on Sunday in order to start classes. A quick trip to the Caribbean coast this weekend will end a summer of relaxation. I have less than four months left before I head back to Iowa, which is bound to greet me with snow and freezing cold temperatures. I plan to take advantage of my remaining time by visiting as many warm places as possible…and will do my best to post about the latest happenings as they occur.

Sunset from El Mirador

'Terror scarf'?

Some of you may remember last year’s controversy that followed a Dunkin Donuts ad in which Rachael Ray appeared wearing a scarf that resembled the Arab keffiyeh, or hattah. Led by blogger Michelle Malkin, who called the keffiyeh “a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos,” conservatives pressured Dunkin Donuts to remove the ad, which the company did, much to the chagrin of Arab-Americans. It is true that the keffiyeh became associated with the Palestinian resistance movement in the 1960s and had been strongly tied to the image of Yasser Arafat. Yet, to many Arabs across the Middle East and in the rest of the world, the keffiyeh is nothing but a traditional headdress worn by men to protect from sun exposure and blowing sand.

Strangely, the keffiyeh, or palestina as Colombians sometimes call it, has become a fashion item in Bogotá in the last few years. People of all ages and classes wear keffiyehs as scarves, without any political consideration at all. You can find palestinas in every market across the city, mixed in with traditional artisan goods. The only person who has ever commented on my wearing of one was an Israeli backpacker, who asked, isn’t that an Arab thing?

The Michelle Malkins of the world would be shocked at how common keffiyehs are in Bogotá. Perhaps someday the conservative campaign to wipe them out as a fashion item will arrive here, as occurred with Urban Outfitters in 2007 (after complaints, the company stopped selling keffiyehs and said it had not intended “to imply any sympathy for or support of terrorists or terrorism”). For now, I can continue wearing mine without causing controversy.

(Interesting final note: Jews also commonly wore keffiyehs until the first Intifada.)

More pics

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Classes ended well, and I feel I got quite a bit out of them. My class on the history of the Colombian armed conflict has given me a good overview of the past century in Colombia, and the professor of the course shared many great stories from the various peace processes he has been involved in with different guerrilla groups. A second class, on the theory of armed conflict, was a downer, as professors Tom Cruise (one looked like Tom Cruise) and Kung Fu Panda (the other like Jack Black) failed to deliver on what could have been an interesting course. Our class on negotiations and peace processes was my favorite and made me realize that I’m most interested in the role the international community can play in the development of peace in internal conflicts—a good interest for me to have, I suppose, given the unlikelihood of an armed conflict in the States.

Sampling chicha, a local beverage of fermented corn, with Jayne and Raimondo

During the second half of the semester, I grew closer to many other students, as our time together extended from the classroom to the social arena. Close friends include: David, who hails from Pasto, the most ridiculed place in Colombia; Raimondo, an Italian whose greatest love is reggaeton; Sophia, the group’s go-to photographer for all social events; Juan Felipe, member of two rock bands, one called Dandi Yonquis that sings completely in English; Juan Ricardo, who recently exposed us foreigners to traditional Colombian music during his birthday celebration; Laura, my partner in crime at the concert of La 33, Bogotá’s most famous salsa band; Mariz, socialist and dancing feign; Carlotta, a Spanish student who recently became my neighbor; and Daniel, another Spaniard who could easily pass as a Colombian—sans the accent—after having spent eight years here.

Amusing ourselves at Juan Valdez, Colombia's popular coffee chain

Old friends also have graced the scene as of late. Priyanka, Margaret, and Jayne, all of whom were with Anthony and me in Cuba in 2006, came to visit a couple weeks ago. Anthony and I enjoyed giving them a tour of the city we presently call home. We sampled Colombia’s most important legal export at various cafes; visited the Botero museum; danced at a variety of clubs, ranging from the Moulin Rouge-esce Andres Carne de Res to the decades-old local hotspot, Goce Pagano; ate fabulously both in my new neighbor and at Restaurante Casa Antonio Dest; and climbed—ok, went by cable car—to the top of Monserrate, the peak that overlooks the city. We also had a chance to leave the city to visit Villa de Leyva, a colonial town five hours outside of Bogotá, where we hiked around waterfalls, went horseback riding at night, and hung out in town’s enormous plaza.

Priyanka and I on top of Monserrate

My friends’ visit was over before it started, only to be followed by a visit from my girlfriend, Paula, en route to a Nourish International summer in Peru. I continued to perfect my skills as a tour guide, and the weather even cooperated for the second week in a row. In addition to general exploring, we had a chance to see Son de Cali in concert and host a house warming party at my new apartment. All went well in the latter, excluding the lack of chairs, which left a number of people on the floor. Oh well, yet another reason Colombians should show up on time!

Son de Cali

Paula left a few days ago, and I have been playing catch-up since. Although I liked living with Rosalba, her son, and the other students, I am enjoying having my own space. The neighborhood—La Macarena—is great, perhaps my favorite in Bogotá. It’s almost in the center of the city, but very residential at the same time. People describe it as bohemian, and it is full of small, excellent restaurants. I’m still furnishing the apartment, but I’ve at least got the essentials—a hammock, tropical plants, coffeemaker, and coffee-scented candles. Some pictures of the new place:

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; The group I am a part of--Afrolatina Salsa Show--was invited to perform. It was our first performance as a group, and I think the four-song show went over pretty well. If nothing else, I made it onto the website of Semana, Colombia's leading weekly magazine. Only eleven pictures were posted! With only three classes though, I can’t complain, as I still have time to have a life outside of school.

Concert of Santana and Fania All-Stars, including Richie Rey, Bobby Cruz, Andy Montañez, Cheo Feliciano, Adalberto Santiago, Johnny Pacheco, Papo Lucca, Roberto Raena, Bobby Valentín, Ismael Quitana, Alfredo de la Fe, and Luis García

In addition to salsa caleña classes, I am now part of a salsa team, our eyes set on Bogotá’s annual salsa competition in July. My salsa instructors have won the partner category for the past three years, and this is the first time they’ve organized some of their students for the group category. Nice prizes for the winning team, as well as the opportunity to perform in the city’s annual salsa festival in August. We’ll see what happens, but we definitely have a lot of work to do.

Santana

I’ve also started volunteering with a great organization called Fundación Niños de los Andes, which runs a variety of programs designed to help street children. I work in the so-called Patrullas de Rescate (Rescue Patrols), in which we carry out a variety of activities in Bogotá neighborhoods that have been identified as problem areas. The activities are designed to promote be awareness of social resources in each community, identify problems specific to each neighborhood, provide medical attention if necessary, and, in some cases, identify children for the foundation’s community homes and rehabilitation programs.

I’m still participating in the research project on ex-combatants, exploring the wealth of Bogotá cafes, getting to know my classmates, etc etc. All in all, life is treating me well. Being called for lunch now, so I better get going. I promise my next post will be a bit more interesting. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Safety, perceptions of safety, and annoying foreigners in Bogotá

Perhaps the most the interesting statistic related to crime in Bogotá is not that the city is one of the safest metropolises on the continent—though this is true—but rather bogotanos have a much more negative perception about safety in their city than other urban Latin Americans have about theirs. I quickly became aware of this phenomenon when I started to receive safety advice that bordered on the extreme—such as, take a taxi from the Transmilenio station to my apartment at night to avoid walking…a block and a half.

Bogotanos obsession with safety seems to be partially related to their social status. The richer, the more paranoid. In part, I think bogotanos’ extreme safety consciousness involves a class bias, a misunderstanding/lack of understanding of the poor on the part of the rich. However, it goes beyond the upper crust of Bogotá, as evidenced by Rosalba, the woman I live with, one of the most safety conscious of them all. I can only guess that darker times in Bogotá history, when murder and kidnapping rates soared, continue to resonate in the minds’ of bogotanos today.

However, the reality is far better than bogotanos would seem to suggest. Bogotá’s murder rate is half that of DC and pales in comparison to Guatemala City, San Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, Caracas, São Paulo, and Tegucigalpa. Figures for robbery and assault paint a similar picture. In any case, I listen to people’s advice and even if I often scale down their safety assessments in my head, I realize they are well-intentioned.

The intentions of another character I call into question. We’ll call the individual in question Paco, though he is a gringo just like me. Anthony Dest and I met Paco at a friend’s apartment. Paco is halfway through his year in Bogotá, participating in a teacher exchange with a school in a poorer area of the city. Without wasting any time, he explained to us how dangerous his situation was, how horrible some of the stories he’d heard were, and how we probably wouldn’t be exposed to “that Bogotá” because we’re attending a university.

To give us an illustrative example, Paco shared with us his daily bus ride that takes him through the Centro—without realizing that I live in the area he is talking about. It’s maybe not the nicest part of Bogotá, but it’s no scene from City of God. Throughout our (short) conversation, Paco continued to exaggerate without shame. While I have no doubt that Paco has been exposed to a number of the sad realities of Bogotá in the area where he teaches, he pertains to a group of people that loves to hype the dangerousness of their living situation, exaggerating in order to demonstrate to the isolated and insulated rest of us that they are living on the edge.

I think it is important to recognize the issues of conflict that continue to exist in Colombia and affect thousands upon thousands of people each year. A series of bombs set off by the FARC in various cities in the last two weeks serves as a reminder that violence in Colombia has a long history and has not gone away. But, Paco, let’s not pretend Bogotá is in the middle of a war zone. Your exaggerations do not help dispel stereotypes about Colombians held by most of the world and make people like me vent about you in the blogosphere to family and friends.

Now that that’s off my chest, I’ll say that the dynamic of the perceptions of violence and crime vs. the reality of Bogotá is fascinating, especially given the manner in which Colombians, over time, have become desensitized to violence. I am still looking for the answer to this puzzle, and I’ll let you know if I ever figure it out.

More pictures from the Torres de Fenicia

I couldn't resist.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; A (brief) bit of background info: The university was founded in 1948 to serve the children of the Colombian elite. It's grown from a student body of 79 students in 1948 to more than 13,500 today and is widely regarded as the best university in Colombia. The university offers 28 undergrad programs and 58 grad programs. And, most importantly, our mascot is a goat named Séneca...

(Pictures can be viewed in full by clicking on them.)

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Luckily, things have picked up quickly, and my days are becoming longer and busier.

My program is a year-long Specialization in Armed Conflict and Peace at the Universidad de los Andes. I currently have three classes—Political Regime and Actors of the Colombian Conflict, Theory of Armed Conflict, and Peace Negotiations. All my professors are incredibly smart, each with a distinct ideology, which should enhance class discussion. The program attempts to balance theoretical and practical aspects of conflict resolution, as most of the students either are working or plan to work in this field.

These students will without a doubt be the best part of my experience at Los Andes. The Specialization draws people who are, in general, older than me, with experiences that put mine to shame. Current and past employers of my classmates include the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Colombian government, and virtually every important NGO in Colombia. Some have done field work in Colombia, engaging in some form with the guerrillas and paramilitaries, while others have found themselves on the ground in such places as Darfur and Kosovo. There are four other international students—two Spaniards, one Italian, and fellow Tar Heel Anthony Dest. I’m definitely the most gringo of all, but it is a reality I’ve become used to.

The workload shouldn’t be overbearing, given that I only have three classes. However, my writing in Spanish will definitely improve, as my grades are almost entirely based on essays. No tests though, which I can live with. My participation in the research project on ex-combatants will take off in a few days.

Conflict in Colombia is not just an academic topic, as events of the last week remind us. The release of four hostages by the FARC yesterday was good news. The two bombs set off by the same group in the last week were not. I look forward to trying to make some sense of the situation at a university that strives to play an important role in the resolution of Colombia’s varied conflicts.

My view

As promised, photos of the view from my room on the fifteenth story of Torre B of Torres de Fenicia.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Even though they are friends of a friend of a friend, I now call them my own, resulting in a quadrupling of the number of people that I know in Bogotá. It makes me feel quite warm inside – a feeling that I hope deepens as classes start at Los Andes on Tuesday. I’ve enjoyed the new company, beginning to dabble in Bogota’s nightlife and not doing all my city exploring by myself. My apartment has become more social as well with the arrival of the other student, Gabriel, who is much more talkative than the caleño, Daniel.

But the good news doesn’t stop there. I’ve met twice with former Rotary Peace Scholar Juan Esteban, who spent two years at UNC/Duke and afterwards returned to Bogotá to work at the Universidad del Externado. He is doing research on dialogue between ex-guerrillas and paramilitaries as well as demobilization and reintegration of ex-combatants into society. I am going to help out with some of his research and also participate in a study group that he plans on forming in February.

I also have wasted no time in starting salsa classes, with the goal of learning salsa caleña, a style characterized by incredibly fast footwork. It’s not easy to find in the States, but Colombia has become famous for it. To get an idea of what its like when danced socially, you can check out a video here.

I like Bogotá more with each day that passes. It has hundreds of cafes, of which I’ve visited a dozen. They do not always excel in quality of coffee – though Café Don Pedro, which roasts its own coffee on site, is a definite exception – but do extremely well in terms of ambiance. Bogotá is also said to have more bookstores than any other city in Latin American, which I definitely believe. All in all, the city is a happening, busy, cultured place that I’ll be able to continue exploring throughout my entire year here.

Photo tour: La Candelaria

La Candelaria, the historical district of Bogotá founded in 1538, begins a few blocks from my apartment. YouTube has since saved me from my frustrations. It’s raining quite hard here in Bogotá, so to pass the time I offer some (non-scientific) thoughts on Obama’s popularity in Colombia.

Some staunch supporters of Colombian President Álvaro Uribe favored McCain in the November elections. Uribe has been Bush’s best buddy in Latin America, a region that has been overwhelmingly unsupportive of the outgoing administration. Uribistas have expressed concern for the future of Plan Colombia, which brings more than half a billion in U.S. military aid to the country each year, and are upset with Democrats’ refusal to ratify a free trade agreement between the two nations. Uribe himself has enjoyed high levels of support from Colombians, mainly due to an improving security situation in many parts of the country. (The picture is not as rosy as Uribe likes to paint it however. A discussion of his policies will come in a future post.)

Nevertheless, Colombians still favored Obama over McCain, even if at a lower margin than the rest of Latin America. For most Colombians, like their fellow Latin Americans, Obama has generated guarded optimism—excitement for Bush’s departure, hope for a change in the meddlesome nature of U.S. foreign policy, and solidarity with Obama’s background, mixed with long-held frustration over the lack of attention paid to region and, worse yet, memories of authoritarian regimes backed (and sometimes, in part, created) by the U.S. government. Everyone from your average José and columnists in Colombia’s leading newspapers question the degree of change Obama will bring to the Casa Blanca.

That’s not to say Obamamania hasn’t had its place, especially among the 20 percent of the country that is Afro-Colombian. In the fall, lottery tickets were issued featuring Obama’s face. The town of Turbaco organized a symbolic election on November 4, in which Obama beat McCain 1128 to 47. Some businesses in Cali gave employees a day off work to celebrate Obama’s election victory. Today the town of Puerto Tejada held a symbolic inauguration in its main plaza to mirror the festivities in Washington.

Video (in Spanish) on celebrations in Puerto Tejada

Interest in today’s events has been extremely high, yet another reminder of the degree to which U.S. policy affects the rest of the world. My university held a viewing of the inauguration with a discussion to follow, and Obama’s speech could be found on all public television channels. Newspapers are filled with analysis of both Obama’s speech and the future nature of the U.S. government.

Today was a great day, but I will wait, like many Colombians, to see the true degree of change Obama will bring to U.S. foreign policy. How he approaches Colombia will be a good indicator, though let's keep our eyes on Cuba and hope the U.S. government finally gets rid of its failed policy toward the island.

Settling in to Bogotá

With classes yet to begin and knowing few people in Bogotá, I’ve spent much of my first six days in Bogotá in solitary ways: dealing with long lines and longer waits at the Administrative Department of Security to get my foreign ID; trying to figure out Bogotá’s often confusing public transportation system; reading up on the Colombian conflict in hopes of not seeming too out of it compared to my Colombian classmates; and, in general, exploring what will be my home for the next year. It’s too soon for me to drawn any grand, overarching conclusions about Bogotá, but I can say that I like the city a lot thus far. Everyone tells me that Bogotá’s greatness lies under the surface, so we’ll see what I discover in the next few months.

I am living in an apartment a block and a half away from Los Andes, in the center of the city, close to the maze of streets that make up the bohemian, historical center of the Bogotá, La Candelaria. The view from my fifteenth floor rooms is unbelievable, for sure the best I will ever have in a city, unless I change career paths and dedicated myself to the pursuit of money and a bachelor pad in a New York City high rise. (I’d love to post pictures, but my camera battery charger sits in Iowa right now, so it might be a few more weeks.)

I rent the room from an older woman, who house three students a semester. One, from Cali, has arrived, but has spent the last couple days at a friends place playing video games. The other gets here this weekend. Both are undergrads, meaning they are quite young—17 and 18 in this case. Maybe they won’t become lifelong friends, but I’m sure we’ll get along.

The señora, Rosalba, is sweet, worries about me, though gets a kick out of the way I’ve taken to the streets, buses, and taxis on my own. Her son, Javier, age 30, originally believed by me to be 24 or 25, lives in the apartment also and has been extremely friendly and helpful. For Linn-Mar graduates and Spanish movie fans – aka I’m only talking to a few of you – Javier looks like the love child of Gabriel Garcia Bernal and Chris Hicks.

My monthly payment includes food (and laundry), which is great. She’s good about explaining the various dishes to me and must think the United States a fruitless country, as my common response to anything about fruit is, We don’t have this one in the States either. (In many cases, English names for the fruits don’t even exist.) The one problem is that, apart from the large lunch, the food is not quite enough to satisfy my insatiable appetite. I’m trying to send a message in the first week to that effect, eating every last scrap of food on my plate, as quickly as possible, always accepting seconds—but, for six dollars a day for three meals, I guess I cannot complain.

All and all, the first few days in Bogotá have been good, though I’ve many focused on settling in. Exciting stories (as one person asked: Where are the drugs, promiscuity, and criminals with big illegal weapons? I wanna hear about you narrowly escaping the throngs of imminent death distracting the goonies with your wit and clever riddles while your lovely sidekick girlfriend kicks them in the groin.), I promise will come. With pictures.

Cali, Cartagena, and Armenia

My arrival to Colombia was marked by delayed and rerouted flights, the loss of all of my luggage, and dozen of phone calls to different airlines in the United States, Panama, and Colombia to find someone who felt like providing information about my bags’ whereabouts. Luckily these memories quickly faded, replaced by the new ones created during my last two weeks of travel. It has been a whirlwind, but well worth the fifty-six hours spent in a bus.

Salsa concert, Estadio Deportivo Cali

My first stop was Cali, which lived up to its name as the capital of salsa. I arrived thinking the characterization was an exaggeration, but was proved wrong as I listened to salsa in buses and taxis, on the street, early in the morning, late at night, everywhere at every time. The salsa highlight, without a doubt, was a twelve-hour concert featuring the salsa artists I mentioned in my last post and many more. Paula and I also went to a bullfight, a part of the Feria de Cali not recognized as a national heritage event this year, a first in Colombian history. Despite this victory for animal rights activists, thousands of (wealthier) caleños turned out for the event, many of them displaying the work of Cali’s finest plastic surgeons—a cultural lesson in itself. The lives of two of the six bulls were spared as a result of their stellar performance, and we left happy knowing that survival of the fittest was well at work. Away from the Feria, I enjoyed meeting a number of Paula’s family members, sampling as many foods and juices as possible, and bringing in 2009 watching the burning of años viejos, effigies of old men lit on fire to symbolically erase the bad experiences of the past year.

Corrida de toros, Cali

With 2008 behind us, Paula and I left Cali and continued on to Cartagena. Cartagena was a principal port through which the Spanish empire exported the richest it robbed from South America. The old part of the city is surrounded by a large wall and is further protected by a variety of forts. These aspects as well as the prominence of those of African descent make Cartagena similar to Havana in many ways. In recent years, Cartagena has exploded and is the country’s primary tourist destination, for Colombians and foreigners alike. It excels in the culinary arts—one of my favorite meals, shrimp cooked in a passion fruit sauce—though the service was notably poor, a surprise given the hospital nature of all Colombians I’ve met so far.

View from Cafe del Mar, on top of the wall surrounding Cartagena

One of my best experiences in Cartagena was going to Playa Blanca, a beach far from the city, away from crowds and unadventurous tourists. To get there, Paula and I paid to ride a cargo boat that left from the local fish market, as the beach is extremely difficult to get to by land. The beach was incredible relaxing—made more so by the massage I received from one of the beach’s many wandering masseuses. I’ll definitely return later this year, this time with plans to stay a couple nights on the beach, where you can rent a hammock for a few dollars.

Playa Blanca, near Cartagena

The last stop on my journey to Bogotá was Armenia, where I got to know the other side of Paula’s family. I liked them all a lot, especially two of Paula’s cousins. Luckily, Paula made it through the last couple days without me trading her in for either one of them. I got to know less of Armenia than Cartagena and Cali, but enjoyed my time there nonetheless.

Paula and cousins at a quince we attended in Armenia

I arrived to Bogotá on Saturday and began exploring yesterday, meeting up with UNC alum, my roommate from Cuba, and the finest Fulbright in Colombia, Anthony Dest. He is also in the program at the Universidad de Los Andes, so I’m sure he’ll be popping up in the blog often. In any case, more on Bogotá very soon...

(A note for my worried family members: I’ve had no problems with safety in Colombia, and the only violence I have experienced has been a bite on the hand from someone’s pet monkey. While Colombia may not be Iowa, there’s no need to worry about me.)

And the adventure begins...finally

Twelve months ago, I found out I was going to spend a year in Colombia studying conflict resolution. What followed was a long period of...waiting. Now, after graduating from UNC in May, working for a few months back home, and spending a few weeks with Paula and my cousin, Colin, in South Africa, I'm on my way.

My first stop will be in Cali, where I'll meet up with Paula for the Feria de Cali, which may bring together more salsa artists than any event in the entire world. (For my salsa friends, imagine Gran Combo, Victor Manuelle, Los Van Van, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Grupo Niche--as just half the line up of one show, on one night.) On the 1st, it's off to Cartagena, followed by Armenia. I'll eventually make my way to Bogota, the city I'll soon call home.

I will be purusing a Specialization in Armed Conflict and Peace, a grad program that is part of the political science department at the Universidad de Los Andes. I owe my year to the fine folks at Rotary, who have made life easier by offering me one of their Ambassadorial Scholarships. I do not know what to expect from my program, but I promise details once classes get underway in a few weeks.

Life after returning from South Africa has been a whirlwind, so I apologize for the rushed post and lack of contact with all of you lately. I'll make up for missed phone calls and unreturned emails soon! For now, I'm off to get a couple of hours of sleep before leaving to catch my plane. I leave you with a couple pictures from South Africa. Enjoy!

Leopard at Elephant Plains in Sabi Sand

Paula, Colin, and I wine tasting at Fairview in Paarl
